September 10: Duke Energy’s POWERfest offers a food truck rodeo and plenty for the kids

Baylerball won't be the only event happening in Hartsville the weekend of September 10-11.  On Saturday, September 10, downtown Hartsville will be hosting POWERfest.  There will be a gourmet food truck rodeo, carnival style rides, games, inflatables and a wide variety of vendors for you to enjoy.  Read the official press release below:

Hartsville and surrounding areas are in for a treat on Sept. 10, as Duke Energy Progress sponsors POWERfest, a community fall festival that will feature the region’s first gourmet food truck rodeo.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Coker Avenue in Hartsville, and is free to the public.

“We’re excited that Duke Energy has decided to bring this event to Hartsville,” Hartsville City Manager Natalie Zeigler said. “We look forward to this becoming an annual tradition.”

The calling card for the event is a food truck rodeo. More than six food truck chefs from across the state promises there will be something for everyone. The Wurst Wagon, Carolina Cookin', Scott Benny's, The Beast, Wolf Pizza Co., and Cupside Down Café will be serving a one-of-a-kind culinary experience. There will also be plenty of sweet treats, including the refreshing coolness of Kona Ice.

There’s more to POWERfest than food, as organizers have worked hard to ensure the event has something for every age and interest.

DJ Dan E. Lockemy will provide the music for most of the event, before giving the stage to ‘80s cover band Retro Vertigo. A student band from the Governor’s School for Science and Math will be the opening act. Dance troupes from the local area will also be showing off their skills.

Children will have plenty of entertainment options at POWERfest. There will be carnival style rides, games with prizes, and inflatables. All of the rides are free of charge. In addition, kids can get hands-on with a petting zoo and a touch-a-truck exhibit that features fire trucks, police vehicles and Duke Energy bucket trucks.

For adults, there will be a wide variety of vendors, showcasing arts and crafts, artisanal creations, clothing and much more. One of the more unique vendors is Sweet Southern Sassyfrass’s Trendy Traveling Boutique, which offers a retail experience that everyone needs to try.

There will also be several noteworthy causes in attendance, including the Marcus Lattimore Foundation and information booths by Duke Energy. Robinson Nuclear Plant employees will teach children about nuclear energy and electricity through interactive demonstrations. There will be a booth for adults as well with information about nuclear energy, tips for saving money on your energy bill, and other pertinent information.

“We wanted to create an event that really has something for everyone,” said Duke Energy spokesperson Charles Ellison. “From unique eats to interesting vendors to free rides for the kids, our goal was to create a fun atmosphere.”

It was a total team effort in both games.  The stellar pitching performances of Hunter Watford, Corey Stagg, Riley Hendrix and Jason Grantham were supported by solid defensive play from Kam Rheuark and Tony DiCorte.  At the plate, the Padres' unrelenting offensive onslaught was led by McKendrie Douglas, Gunner Jordan and Slayton Stokes.  Equipment manager JC Carraway rounded out the total team performance by keeping the guys focused on their championship goals.

Padres Holding 3rd Annual Sports Equipment Drive for Carolina Kids

Pee Dee Padres to hold 3rd Annual
Sports Equipment Drive for Carolina Kids
Donations can be made at Burry Bookstore and Carolina Printing & Trophy

The Pee Dee Padres are partnering with Burry Bookstore and Carolina Printing & Trophy to make a difference in Darlington County through a sports equipment drive for Carolina Kids. 2015 marks the third consecutive year of the sports equipment drive.

“We’re excited to continue this great program,” said Padre Coach Lawrence Hope. “This is a great opportunity for our kids to help others who may not have the same opportunities they do.”

The concept for the equipment drive is simple. Collection bins are located at Burry Bookstore (130 W. Carolina Avenue) and Carolina Printing & Trophy (618 S. Fifth Street). The bins will be there from November 21st through December 14th. Simply drop off new or gently-used sports equipment in one of the blue bins. Once collected, the equipment will be distributed by Carolina Kids, a non-profit organization with the mission of enhancing the lives of children in Darlington County by investing in social change and breaking down economic barriers.

“Obviously, we want to teach our players about the game of baseball. It’s also important for our coaches to demonstrate to the players how they can make a difference in the community. Thanks to our business partners Carolina Kids, we are able to do that in a very impactful way,” said Padre Coach Bruce Douglas.

Burry Bookstore’s hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 10am to 9pm. Carolina Printing & Trophy is open Monday through Friday 9am to 6pm.

The Pee Dee Padres are a travel baseball club made up three age groups (9u, 10u, 11u) with players from Hartsville, Darlington, Lamar, Lexington, Green Sea, Chesterfield and McBee. Formed in 2013, the Padres are sponsored by MKA Mechanical, Wilson Metal Roofing & Construction, Jiffy Print, Norwood Insurance, Palmetto Transport Specialist, Mitchell’s Painting Services, Hartsville Surgical Center, Luan Jeffords of Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate – Segars Realty, Lizard’s Thicket, Pee Dee Fleet Services and Bunce Buildings.
